GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR HARNESS RETIREMENT

General Guidelines for Harness Retirement refers to the recommended practices and procedures for determining when a safety harness should be taken out of service and replaced. These guidelines are essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the harness during its use. Key components typically include:

Manufacturer’s Instructions: Adhere to the manufacturer’s specific instructions for inspecting, maintaining, and retiring harnesses. Your diligence in following these guidelines is key to ensuring safety.

Regular Inspections: Conduct thorough inspections before each use and periodically by a competent person.

Damage Assessment: Any signs of wear, damage, or chemical exposure warrant taking the harness out of service.

Post-Fall Arrest: Retire the harness immediately after it has been involved in a fall, even if there’s no visible damage.

Note:

  • Five (5) years is the recommended age to retire the harness.
  • Some manufacturers of higher-quality harnesses may allow above 5 years (but only if 1-4 are in order).
  • Always inspect and record when the harness comes into service.
